What you see- After an overnight train journey in Matsyagandha express from Mumbai, we reached karwar station at around nine in the morning. Stepping out, we hailed an auto rickshaw to reach the brightly colored jungle resorts office located near Kodibag post office. The polite and helpful staff after checking our reservations guided us to the jetty point. After a pleasant 15 minute boat ride on the backwaters of the Kali we reached Devbagh Beach Resort. Located on the uninhabited island of Devbagh, the resort is nestled amidst a casuarinas grove facing a shallow and private beach. We were ushered in for breakfast in the open from all sides, Gol Ghar by the helpful staff with a promise of a leisurely dip in the pristine waters in the afternoon low tide.

What you get- The resort has log huts and cottages on stilts with attached bath and tents for day use with separate bath located outside. After breakfast we headed to enjoy an hour long boat ride to try our luck at spotting dolphins and were not disappointed. On a clear day one gets to watch many of them at their playful best. On our return, we were informed by the life guard that it was safe to venture in the water. The private beach is shallow and one can enjoy without any fear. After the dip we headed to the Gol Ghar once again for lunch which was a buffet with good choice of vegetarian and non vegetarian food.

The resort also offers a host of exciting water sports such as parasailing, snorkeling, speedboat cruises, banana boat rides, water scooter and kayaking manned by skilled instructors. We tried the thrilling retro ride. Tied to a speed boat, we screamed, giggled and bounced on the waves. Partially soaked we headed back to take a quiet walk on the beach. After enjoying piping hot tea we relaxed on the hammock. Later as the sun set, the staff prepared a bon fire and barbecue by the beach. Dinner was served shortly, which consisted of a vegetarian soup, seafood delicacies like fried kingfish, vegetarian dishes like rajma, prawn curry, roti, dal and rice. The food was simple but well made. Usually they serve one dessert in lunch and dinner. Next morning, guests can either enjoy a nature walk organized by the resort or head to the nearby Devbagh village to watch the fisher-folk fishing.

Our Verdict- Located at a beautiful and serene island in Karwar, Devbagh Beach Resort can be reached by train from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmadabad, Mangalore, Cochin and other important places through the Konkan Railway as most trains stop at Karwar. Alternatively karwar is just a two hour drive from South Goa by road as the nearest airport is Dabolim, Goa. Build sand castles, collect seashells, indulge in a game of beach volleyball, wade into the sea to greet the playful waves or simply laze on a hammock watching the shimmering sea. With no television sets or newspapers to interrupt the relaxing time, one can unwind with nature. No wonder, Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, penned poetry after spending some time in Karwar. Karnataka's undiscovered gem, Devbagh beach resort is a good romantic getaway for couples or for families looking at relaxing without the usual hectic activities like mall hopping and shopping. We returned with fond memories and a promise to explore more of coastal Karnataka. The resort offers no room service except for tea and coffee. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are part of the package.
