What you get- After the escorted tour of the winery, where we were introduced to the various nuances of the wine making process, we settled in the tasting room. Our friendly tour guide very patiently explained us to appreciate wines by following the see, swirl, sniff, and sip method.

We were given four different wines and there were appreciative murmurs all around. Once everyone had picked their favorite wine, we settled on the open deck of the tasting room. The menu at Sula boasts of different types of reds, whites, sparkling, dessert and rose wines. Take your pick from young wines like Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz or Zinfandel. For wine connoisseurs, Dindori reserve Shiraz, which is aged in oak barrels for one year or Rasa, aged in oak for three years might hold an instant appeal. The food menu is limited to light snacks and cold cuts. We settled for a bottle of Sula Blush Zinfandel, a fruity and very smooth pink colored wine, served chilled. For food, we ordered endless dishes of cheese cherry pineapple on sticks made with processed cheese cubes, pitted cherries and cubed pineapples and salami platter, which came with crackers and a sweet and spicy dip.

We sat there gazing at the sunset and taking in the atmosphere. As sleep beckoned, we decided to head to our 20 room boutique hotel, Beyond. The resort has beautiful wine themed rooms with a private balcony, spa facilities and a swimming pool.

Our Verdict- Open all around the year, Sula Vineyards offers an ideal getaway amongst lush green hills and is easily accessible from Mumbai and Pune. Though, monsoons are a good time to visit, there are events and happenings throughout the year, the most popular event being Sulafest. Grape stomping sessions are held in late January or early February at nominal costs. Indulge in a blissful spa ritual at Beyond or cycle around finding hidden spots. Sula also has an open air Greek-style amphitheatre. Sula as a policy serves only wines and guests also have an option of Italian dining at the Mediterranean style, Little Italy or the Indian restaurant, Soma. Soon, one will be able to enjoy kayaking at the Gangapur Lake. Rooms at Beyond start from Rs 6000 plus taxes and include complimentary three meals and wine tours. Alternatively, one can enjoy wine tours starting at Rs 150. Merchandise like glass bottle lamps, wine racks, Sula T-shirts and more are also available at reasonable prices.
