Hair are a very important part of our personality and a reflection of our health. Moreover, it’s not that always our health that influences the look of our hair. Many external factors too affect the health of our hair along with our skin. For example, exposure to sun, heat treatments, chemical jobs (like coloring and setting sprays) lead to listless, lifeless hair with no shine and lots of split-ends. Pre-poo routines come to our rescue at such a time.

What is pre-poo routine for natural hair:

Pre-poo has started gaining popularity only recently as famous hair stylists started talking about it. In the same way pre-poo benefits started surfacing across various publications. There are various recipes that you can follow to make some per-conditioners at home without relying on the chemical-based products available in the market. In addition, some recipes are targeted too, especially pre-poo for hair growth is a widely searched topic.

So, what is the meaning of a pre-poo routine? In simple words, the routine focuses on giving moisture to your hair that we tend to lose despite of being very careful in choosing shampoo and an after-shampoo conditioner. Pre-poo gives hair protection that is otherwise stripped off because of the usage of shampoos and conditioners.

Here are some easy pre-poo DIY recipes:

Mayo Conditioning

INGREDIENTS:

1 tbsp egg-based mayonnaise
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp curd

APPLICATION:

Add all ingredients in a bowl and mix them well.
Part hair in 4 sections and then, subdivide each section into more sections. Take the mix in your fingers and apply over the length of the hair (leaving the roots) in each section.
Put a second layer of the mix on the lower parts of the section. Make sure to cover the tips of the hair well. Leave the pre-conditioner on for 20-30 minutes.

Wash with cold water and apply a Sulfate-free shampoo or a baby shampoo and rinse off with cold or lukewarm water.

Anti-frizz Conditioning

A very nourishing conditioner that also works wonders in taming very frizzy hair.

Ingredients:

1 whole large ripe banana
¼ cup plain curd or more for longer hair
01 tbsp honey

Application:

Put all the ingredients in a mixer grinder and make a very smooth paste. Part the hair in small multiple sections. Evenly apply the hair conditioner on the hair and massage the same into the hair shaft. Leave the pre-conditioner on the hair for 10 minutes and cover the entire shaft of the hair leaving the roots. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and use a mild Sulfate-free shampoo to clean your hair.

You may find some residue of the pre-conditioner in your hair even after washing; just let the hair dry naturally and comb off the dry conditioner from the hair.

Conditioning for Itchy Scalp

A great conditioner for an itchy scalp. Avocado conditioner works wonders on dry scalp and helps eliminate dandruff. This conditioner also adds the desired moisture to the hair and scalp.

Ingredients:
½ ripe avocado
¼ cup egg-based mayonnaise, or more as per length of the hair
1 tbsp Vit E oil
½ tsp lemon juice

Application:

Mix all the ingredients together in a blender to a smooth paste.

Part hair in small multiple sections. Apply the per-conditioner mix on the entire length of hair. Massage the per-conditioner into the hair and leave it on for 10-15 mins on the hair. Wash off with lukewarm water followed by a mild shampoo.

Conditioning for Lifeless Hair

This is one of the simplest yet extremely nourishing conditioning for dull lifeless hair.

Ingredients:

1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp mustard oil

Application:

Mix the coconut oil and mustard oil in a bowl and heat the bowl a little. Do not let the oil smoke.

Part hair in multiple small sections. Wet your hair with a spray bottle and apply the oil mix only on the hair shaft. Massage the conditioner in the hair and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse the hair off with lukewarm water and a mild sulfate-free shampoo.

Conditioning for Straight and Smooth Hair

Using this conditioner can give a lot of shine and help make the texture of hair straight and smooth.

Ingredients:

2 tbsp of aloe vera gel (preferably fresh)
1tsp lime juice
1 tsp sesame oil
2 biotin tablets (crushed to fine powder)

Application:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Make small sections of the hair. Wet the hair with a spray bottle and apply the conditioner on the hair shaft by using an applicator brush or with hand. Massage the conditioner into the hair shafts and then comb the hair straight with a wide tooth comb. Leave the conditioner in for 20-30 mins. Rinse hair with lukewarm water and with a mild baby shampoo or a sulfate-free shampoo.

All these conditioners are great and easy to make and apply. This method of preconditioning before shampoo helps the hair to retain its moisture. This also nourishes the hair rather than stripping off its essential oils and health that is often the result of using harsh chemical conditioners after shampooing. The prolonged use of such chemical-based conditioners can cause greying and lifelessness of hair.

Using a pre-poo routine for improving the health of the hair has proven to bring out great results and is a trending method of conditioning.
